MLS Insider SuperDraft Diary: Artistry off the pitch

KANSAS CITY, Mo. There was no time to acclimate to the cooler weather of Kansas City after arriving from Ft. Lauderdale on Wednesday. Upon walking out of the airport, you were immediately hit with the fact that you had exchanged the Florida sun for the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter.

There was also no time to ease into the madness that is SuperDraft.

After touching down just after noon, I sent my bags to the hotel with a co-worker and hopped in the first available cab to make my way to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, a sprawling, world-class encyclopedic museum that houses everything from works by Rodin to giant-sized shuttlecocks. Here a selection of MLS hopefuls including...

Israeli and Palestinian hackers trade DDoS attacks in rising cyber-gang war

Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli hackers are waging a cyber street-fight in a tit-for-tat exchange of posturing, threats of mass credit card exposures, and denial-of-service attacks. As Hamas has egged on hackers in recent weeks, promoting more hacktivist attacks against Israeli targets, pro-Israel hackers have responded in kind, today taking down the websites of stock exchanges in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Both sites appear to be back online.

Those site takedowns are in response to denial of service attacks yesterday (January 16) and today against the websites of the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, First International Bank of Israel, the Israeli national airline El Al, and at least...

Asia-Pacific Growth to Weaken as Trade Slows, World Bank Says

Developing economies in the Asia-
Pacific region will slow for a second straight year in 2012, as
a European downturn and weaker global trade restrain growth in
China and India, the World Bank said.

India’s gross domestic product will advance 6.5 percent
this year, down from 8.4 percent estimated in June, the bank
said in a report. China’s outlook was unchanged from a November
forecast for 8.4 percent growth after a 9.1 percent gain in
2011, leading the East Asia and Pacific region’s 7.8 percent
expansion this year, it showed.

Nations from Thailand to Indonesia to Malaysia have reduced
interest rates or left them unchanged...

Source of western civilization lies in the East

The United States and the Middle East are quite content to engage in commercial (oil) exchange, but seem incapable of using such transactions to realize any deeper cultural understanding, let alone interaction.

In the ancient world the two frequently went hand in hand, especially when the Middle East was the superpower.

Ancient Greece is the cradle of civilization for the Western world, but what was the cradle of civilization for the Greeks? The shaft-graves of Agamemnons Mycenae (16th century BC) tell the story, with their glass beads from Iraq, elephant tusks from Syria, jugs and vases from Egypt, drinking vessels from Egypt or Syria/Palestine made of Nubian ostrich eggs and lapis...

Haida exhibit to tour museums in Europe

GATINEAU, Que. – European museum-goers will get a chance to encounter Haida artworks, both historical and contemporary, in a touring exhibition of exceptional quality from Canada, says the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Museums in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Britain are expected to host Haida: Life. Spirit. Art. in 2014-16.

The exhibition stems from a show produced in 2006 at the McCord Museum in Montreal and later shown at the Museum of Civilization. Those institutions are partnering with the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate, BC, to produce the touring version.

Nathalie Macfarlane, director of the Haida Gwaii Museum, called the collaboration...
