MEDFORD, NY (CBSNewYork) A local Iraq War veteran lost sight in his left eye, his ability to practice law and some mobility. Now, hes counting on a canine companion to help with the little, but important things in life.

Retired Army Capt. James Van Thach walks with a cane and with Liz his assistance dog by his side. Just two weeks ago, they were paired for life by Canine Companions for Independence. Theyve been in training ever since.

Its a very challenging process and a rewarding process because were building a new relationship, Van Thach told CBS 2s Vanessa Murdock.

Its a constant companionship between man and mans best friend. The Wounded Veteran Initiative pairs brilliant canines like Liz with wounded warriors for free.

Not only for emotionally, but physically because its so difficult with my disability, Van Thach said, describing the programs benefits.

The retired captain was injured twice during a two-year deployment to Iraq first by an improvised explosive device (IED) and then by a rocket which exploded just 20 meters away from him.

My body got picked up by the bomb blast and I was thrown to the ground, Van Thach explained. And I incurred a traumatic brain injury.

Van Thach suffers from migraines and short-term memory loss. He has also lost some mobility in his back and neck, making it hard to bend down.

Most financial advisers and investors are sticking to a strict diet with exchange-traded funds, avoiding all but the most popular of options.

Heading into this month, just 25 funds held 61% of all the assets in US-listed ETFsand there are more than 1,458 on the market right now, according to investment researcher XTF Global. That herd-like mentality is credited by analysts to an emphasissome say an overemphasison size and liquidity.

A growing number of ETFs focus on smaller niches and esoteric themes, which could be useful in a portfolio but their bid-ask spreads are often wider because they hold fewer assets and trade less often.

Im not sure what to call Califfs tale of woe, but if I were to ask him for a working title, it probably would be one laced with expletives and disdain for a club he poured 2 1/2 years of blood, sweat and an offseason knee surgery into.

Califfs version of the story, told first to the Daily News, is one riddled with angst and sleepless nights and devoid of wife Erin, who, when informed by her husband of his off-again, on-again trade situation, became a wreck on the other line, 3,000 miles away.

According to Califf, 32, he was told by Union boss Peter Nowak that along with Chivas, lowly Toronto FC also wanted his services. And that given the choice to weigh the two options it was a no-brainer.

But that wasnt the issue here.

The issue for Califf was listening to Nowak on Wednesday spin the story his captain was eager to return to California to continue his MLS career where it began 12 years ago while a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy.

It made me want to throw up, said Califf.

But while he repeatedly admitted that Nowak kept him in the loop, Califf said it still felt like being kept in the dark, at the same time.

I think Peter was forthcoming in the fact that there were rumors, offers or whatever for a trade, said Califf. Between myself and Toronto and to be fair to him he did tell me about the offers. But at that point, how do you take that? Your coach is telling you theres offers, but there are offers all the time so the only way you can take that is they were looking to get rid of me.

Califf, however, remained mum until the dust settled late Thursday when it was announced that in return, the Union received allocation money and midfielder Michael Lahoud, a player joining an already crowded pool of young talent in the center of the park.

Dont tell me this move wasnt all about the Benjamins, especially with Julys summer-transfer window looming.

Change is never easy and when you give your heart to something and much of yourself, and it all gets ripped out from under you, that part of yourself is essentially ripped away, said Califf. Its like putting a Band-Aid on a scab and then ripping the Band-Aid off over and over and over again. I understand that these types of trades happen in professional sports all the time, I mean I am not stupid to this fact, but we were just in a really good place as a family [here in Philadelphia] and thats why it hurt so bad.

The Union pawning Califf lifts his six-figure salary off the books but it also removed one of the few outspoken personalities in the locker room. Califf was a leader as much on the field as off, visiting hospitals and reading books at schools and known to have a pint or two with supporters. Its even rumored that during his end of days here in Philadelphia, he did the latter at a local pub.

There was plenty of drama in Philly, plenty of stuff that doesnt need to get rehashed, and a lot of that involves me unfortunately, said Califf. But Im just trying to realize this situation, get my feet under me and wrap my head around the fact that I am walking into a locker room full of faces I dont know.

The whole deal was one for the bizarro-files, as in spite of the trade pending only approval from Major League Soccer, according to Nowak, Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser and Goats general manager Jose Domene saw things a lot differently. After getting wind of Nowaks comments Wednesday, Fraser and Domene were seen leaving a morning training session in haste, with Domene telling an ESPN reporter that the two have to put out a fire.

The fire appears to be that while Nowak believed Califf was on his way, Fraser hadnt read all the fine print, and according to an ESPN report, there was no deal yet at the time of Nowaks presser. Though he admitted talks were ongoing, Fraser seemed miffed that Nowak would make such information public before things were finalized.

At this point I would say hellip; I guess until any deal is done, you cant say for sure, Fraser said. And when asked at the time if Califf would even join Chivas, he added, I am not sure how to answer that, to be quite honest. I hate to be evasive, but I cant say more than that. We are very much in a discussion with them.

Except pending league approval, according to Nowak, the deal between the two sides was wrapped and on Wednesday (barring official announcement) Califf became the last non-rookie Union original to leave the locker room in exchange for a player to be named and something else, according to Nowak.

So why the secrecy from Chivas? That in itself was a mystery and a whole other columnhellip;

Perhaps the one person who played it smart in all this was Califf. When I reached out to him via text earlier this week, he responded only by saying: I know I said I would talk, please dont think I am dodging or ignoring you. Thank you, Danny. It was perhaps the savviest play in this whole fiasco considering hes the one caught in the thick of it. Erin Califf didnt share her husbands sentiment and posted on the Unions Facebook page: My husband DID NOT WANT to be traded The Truth after the reports of what Nowak said Wednesday got out. The post was later taken down.

The dust has settled on this situation, and in retrospect, with minimal damage. But its hard to deny that this is yet another occasion involving the Union where the transition hasnt been seamless. When asked if he saw any similarities in the way he and many other former Union players took their final exits, Califf quipped: The only difference is that my exit took a few days longer.

By Louis Charbonneau and Michelle Nichols

UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (Reuters) – A UN panel of experts that monitors compliance with sanctions on North Korea is investigating reports of possible weapons-related shipments by Pyongyang to Syria and Myanmar, the panel said in a confidential report seen by Reuters on Thursday.

The DPRK (North Korea) continues actively to defy the measures in the (UN sanctions) resolutions, the panel said in the report, which it submitted to the UN Security Councils North Korea sanctions committee earlier this week.

Member states did not report to the committee any violations involving transfer of nuclear, other (weapons of mass-destruction)-related or ballistic missile items, it said. But they did report several other violations including illicit sales of arms and related materiel and luxury goods.

UN panel of experts sanctions reports are highly sensitive. China, which is named in the report as a transit hub for illicit North Korean arms-related breaches, has prevented the 15-nation Security Council from publishing past reports and may do so with the latest one, UN envoys have told Reuters.

Although the (sanctions) have not caused the DPRK to halt its banned activities, they appear to have slowed them and made illicit transactions significantly more difficult and expensive, the panels report said.

One of the cases involving illicit arms trade with Syria was reported to the councils sanctions committee last month.

In April 2012, France reported to the committee that it had inspected and seized in November 2010 an illicit shipment of arms-related materiel originating from the DPRK and destined for Syria, the report said.

The shipment, which was on board the ship M/V San Francisco Bridge, was said to be containing copper bars and plates.

However, Frances inspection of the cargo revealed that it contained brass discs and copper rods used to manufacture artillery munitions (pellets and rods for crimping cartridges and driving bands) and aluminum alloy tubes usable for making rockets, the panel said.

Another case involved a 2007 shipment of propellant usable for SCUD missiles and other items that could be used for ballistic missiles. The panel had referred to it in last years report but added details about a Syria connection and confirmed that it had been transported via China.

This shipment originated in the DPRK, was trans-shipped in Dalian (China), and Port Kelang (Malaysia), and transited through other ports, the report said. It was en route to Latakia, Syria.

Although both shipments were made before the Syrian government launched its assault on opposition demonstrators in March 2011, diplomats said they were worrying because it showed the kinds of items Damascus had been trying to add to its arsenal – and the aid it received from North Korea and China.

The panel said it could not prove North Korea continued to maintain ballistic missile cooperation with Iran, Syria and other countries, but notes that it would be consistent with reports of the DPRKs long history of missile cooperation with these countries and with the panels observations.

(Reporting By Louis Charbonneau and Michelle Nichols; Editing by Peter Cooney)

[...]

UK Prime Minister David Cameron,
preparing to meet fellow leaders at a Group of Eight summit
today, said agreeing to lower trade barriers would be the best
stimulus to the world economy.

“We must work together to give the world economy the one
big stimulus that would really make a difference: an expansion
of trade freedoms,” Cameron wrote in an article published on
the PoliticsHome website before the leaders gather at Camp
David, Maryland, outside Washington. “Together, the EU and US
account for almost a third of global trade, so a deal with the
US could potentially be bigger than all the other EU trade
deals on the table.”

The prime minister will focus his efforts at getting
agreement to begin trade talks between the European Union and
the US He renewed his commitment yesterday to austerity even
with Britain in recession, arguing that low interest rates were
the best way of boosting growth.

Cameron repeated that message in a television interview
this morning before leaving for Camp David. He said his deficit-
reduction plans are supporting economic growth, not harming it,
and are no more demanding than those of newly elected French
President Francois Hollande. The two leaders will hold their
first face-to-face meeting today before the G-8 get-together.

‘Fundamental Judgment’

“I listen to all the criticism, I’m not living in some cut-
off world, but the fundamental judgment is you need a plan to
get on top of your debt and deficit to keep the economy
growing,” Cameron told ITV’s “Daybreak” program.

The premier said the euro-region debt crisis could get “a
lot worse” unless decisive action is taken, repeating a warning
to the leaders of the single-currency area to act now to halt
contagion that might worsen Britain’s recession.

“These are very difficult economic times and what’s
happening in the euro zone is truly worrying,” Cameron said. “If
things go badly wrong in the euro zone that affects us.”

Cameron said more needed to be done “to persuade euro-zone
countries to take really decisive action” to deal with their
problems rather than “kicking the can down the road.”

The prime minister made his views clear to Hollande and
other European leaders going to the G-8 in a videoconference
yesterday afternoon, according to his office.

Summit Agenda

The economy is the first of five issues scheduled for
discussion at the Camp David summit. In his article, Cameron
praised President Barack Obama’s decision to restore intimacy to
the sessions. Each leader will only be allowed one aide in the
room. Also on the agenda are energy and climate change, food
security, Afghanistan, and the Middle East and North Africa.

Cameron said the second of his priorities was the spread of
democracy, pointing to elections in Tunisia and Egypt, and the
revolution in Libya. Tonight over dinner, the leaders will
discuss Iran, Syria and Myanmar.

“The trend towards more open and accountable systems is
clear,” wrote Cameron, who last month met Myanmar’s opposition
leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on a visit to the country. “Those who
deny this reality will end up on the wrong side of history. The
G-8 must continue to show real leadership and creativity in
finding ways to support successful transitions.”

Pet blessings via Twitter are being offered by a Surrey church as part of two special services.

St Pauls Church, Camberley, has asked people to send photos of their animal companions through the social networking site.

The Reverend Claire Isherwood plans to ask owners questions via Twitter on Sunday before giving thanks for their pets and those in the church hall.

The two interactive service are being held between 09:45 and 11:45 BST.

 Two sparrows

Andy Salt, the churchs social media officer, said: Our pets are all part of Gods wonderful creation, and an important part of the family.

As it says in Matthew 10:29, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Fathers care.

Since animals cant normally go to church, we reserve one day a year as a special day to include them and bless them.

He added: We wanted a way to open up St Pauls to the people in the wider community, so everyone can take part in our annual pet service, not just those physically present.

We have formed good relationships in our parish using Twitter, so its the obvious way to hear about peoples pets.

We are hoping zoos and wildlife sanctuaries will also take part and tell us about their more unusual animals too.

Parishioners planning to take their pets to St Pauls have been asked to take no animals larger than a dog.

For 450 years before the first successful voyage in 1906, people sought the Northwest Passage, a potentially lucrative shipping route linking Europe to Asia that would cut out the lengthy journey around the horn of South America.

Many died trying to find it, including Sir John Franklin whose HMS Erebus and HMS Terror attempted the fabled Passage in 1845 but sank without a trace. Their 129 men died eating each other on the unforgiving ice.

But by the time Dueck set off on his voyage more than 100 years later in June 2009, 35 sailing yachts had made the trip. The majority of those took place after 1990, made possible by a stark reality: the ice was now melting fast.

I wanted to see something very few people have seen, Hong Kong-based journalist and sailor Dueck told AFP at the launch of his book about the voyage, The New Northwest Passage, at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club last week.

It was about finding out what climate change looked like for real. Not just in terms of what were told by politicians, or what corporations say in their mission statements, he said.

The extent to which Arctic ice is breaking up is an illustration of the growing impact of climate change in the Poles, where temperatures are rising more quickly than the rest of the world.

There has been no ice for up to a month in the last several years during the summer, Peter Semotiuk, a long-term resident of the Canadian Arctic and an expert on sailing conditions in the area, told AFP by e-mail.

Semotiuk said the 2011 season featured the highest number of yachts ever to complete the Passage, with 16 making it through — more than double the previous years seven.

I do see the effect of less ice cover through the Northwest Passage route, Semotiuk said, adding that commercial shipping is also on the increase as the ice melts. It seems the whole Arctic ice pack is affected.

Dueck and his three crewmates sailed the 40-foot Silent Sound 8,000 nautical miles — or 15,000 kilometers — from Victoria in British Columbia, up to Dutch Harbor in Alaska, through the Bering Straight, down into the Beaufort Sea before hitting the Davis Strait between Canada and Greenland.

What they found was startling.

While the loss of Arctic sea ice threatens wildlife such as polar bears, seals and walruses that depend on it as a platform for hunting, mating and migration, the human cost is less well charted, said Dueck.

He met Alaskan fishermen who sail the Bering Sea for fish and crabs, and who are increasingly joining the dots between disappearing ice, warmer temperatures and their own changing fortunes.

Then there is the Inuit — who have been forced to change their lives due to the impact of climate change, from harvesting berries a month earlier than they used to, to ancestral hunting knowledge being reduced to irrelevance by the swiftly warming environment.

They used to be able to read the ice — look at wind, temperatures, the moon phase and understand when it was safe to be on the ice and when it was time to pack up and head to shore, said Dueck.

But these days, they no longer trust the ice, or their traditional ways of reading the ice, because it is breaking up sooner and no longer according to the patterns they know.

While Dueck admits such anecdotal evidence has not been fully processed scientifically, when every hunter you meet is saying the same thing, that tells you all you need to know.

British producer Jeremy Thomas prides himself on sticking with his passion projects for as long as it takes to find a way to get them made. But even by his standards, the making of Kon-Tiki was a journey almost as epic as the story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahls voyage on a balsa-wood raft across the Pacific Ocean in 1947.

Thomas started developing the movie in 1996, at the suggestion of his friend Michael Douglas. Douglas urged him to get in touch with the Norwegian industrialist and publisher Johan Stenersen, who owned the rights to all the materials relating to Heyerdahls quest.

Thomas remembered from his boyhood the story of how Heyerdahl set out to prove that the Polynesian islands had been colonized 1,500 years ago by people from South America. Other scientists claimed it was impossible for such primitive people to have travelled 5,000 miles across the open ocean, so Heyerdahl embarked on a hand-built raft to show it could be done.Stenersen introduced Thomas to Heyerdahl, and although Heyerdahl had rejected many offers to dramatize his story as a movie, Thomas, armed with the credibility of his own Oscar victory in 1988 with The Last Emperor, won him over.

At the time, Thomas was hoping to mount Kon-Tiki as a feature on the Hollywood scale, with a $50 million budget. He recruited a succession of big-name writers from America and Britain to discuss the project with Heyerdahl. Melissa Mathison wrote a draft, and Phillip Noyce came aboard to direct. But for years Thomas simply couldnt make any headway with the financing.

Those were the days before vfx imagery would make it much easier and cheaper than shooting on an ocean location. Thomas says that to tell the story properly required a larger budget but I couldnt get that amount of money for this story.

Eventually Stenersen, who was aboard as an investor in the project, suggested Thomas should try a new tack, by making Kon-Tiki as a Norwegian film. They hired a new writer, Petter Skavlan, in an attempt to mount the film on a smaller scale. Noyce had been attached for a decade, but stepped aside for Norwegian helmers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who had a hit with the 2008 WWII drama Max Manus.

Scandi distrib Nordisk came aboard as a partner, with Aage Aaberge as the Norwegian producer. They were able to access many funds across Scandinavia that were not available to me, Thomas says.

Over half the budget was raised from a collection of Scandi backers, including the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish Film Institutes. Thomas also brought in German distrib DCM as a co-producer, with his own HanWay Fims handling worldwide sales. The budget topped out at $19 million.

Instead of shooting in Australia and Fiji, as Thomas originally envisaged, the production took place last year in and around the Mediterranean island of Malta, fleshed out by around 500 vfx shots from Scandi post houses Important Looking Pirates, Fido, Stormstudios and Gimpville. Rather than having to build a raft, the team was given an authentic Norwegian replica that had previously been constructed to continue some of Heyerdahls researches. I could never have got that if it hadnt been a Norwegian film, Thomas notes.

Kon-Tiki world premieres Aug. 19 as the opening film of the Norwegian Film Festival.

Taylor Swift is known for her confessional songs regarding her romantic relationships, but she is also able to celebrate other interpersonal connections through a different artform. The singer has released a new line of Mothers Day cards via American Greetings, which feature her imagery of her tunes, like Stay Beautiful and The Best Day, the latter of which she penned for her own mom, Andrea.

With such descriptive lyrics, Swifts catalog of songs certainly allows itself to be transposed to greeting cards. The 22-year-old superstar released Valentines Day cards last year, and that was a perfect match, given the romantic nature of so many of her songs.

But Swifts lyrics lend themselves to greeting card sentiments no matter what the holiday.

According to Country Music Is Love, Lindsay Kalback, who works on the Swift brand team at the card maker, said, We’ve worked very hard to ensure that this year’s Mother’s Day collection from Taylor had the right variety to help consumers celebrate all of the moms in their life.

She continued, The cards really do a great job of reflecting the details that make every relationship unique while still offering the casual tone, bold designs, and fun enhancements that have made the collection so popular. We can’t wait for shoppers to check out the collection and we are even more excited for moms to receive the cards.”

The new-for-2012 Mothers Day cards definitely portray Swifts cute country charm with their pastel color, girlish details and feminine imagery. Nab a sweet, heartfelt greeting for your mom. We bet shell love it.
